Ras Al Khaimah traffic police, marking 40 years of the UAE union, announced a 40 per cent reduction in traffic offence fines and hoped this would provide an incentive to drivers to respect road rules.

The reduction will be enforced in the first four months of 2012 and will cover all traffic offences, the semi official daily Alittihad said.

Quoted by the daily, RAK traffic police chief Sheikh Talber bin Saqr Al Qassimi said he hoped the decision would ease the financial burden on drivers and allow them to participate in the union celebration.

“We call on all drivers to use this occasion to respect traffic laws to avert penalties and protect their lives and other human lives,” he said.

The paper said the decision would be enforced on January 1 but did not mention dates of the fines which will be covered by the reduction.
