An appeals court in Dubai has upheld a previous verdict and sentenced a public servant to life in prison after he was convicted of raping a Japanese tourist, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The 24-year-old woman had trusted the man when he offered to give her a lift to Hatta heritage village, knowing that she does not know the area.

Instead of heading for her destination, he drove to a desert area in the desert, threatened to kill her and raped her. Once he finished, he apologised to her and drove her back to the tourist bus station. The woman then went straight to the Japanese consulate and told them about the incident.

Emirat Today Arabic language daily said the appeals court supported the life sentence against the unnamed defendant on charges of kidnap, rape by force and threat to kill.
