Sharjah police arrested a gang of Gulf Arab men involved in stealing rented cars and smuggling them out of the country by using drivers seeking jobs and tempting them with high monthly wages, newspapers said on Tuesday.

The thieves used newspapers advertisements placed by job-seekers to lure them into their illegal business without their knowledge, they said.

One driver was offered Dh5,000 per month, housing and a free mobile phone to work for their so-called company and was asked to rent a 2011 Toyota Land cruiser car from a local car hire firm, where he left his passport.

After he handed the vehicle to them, they tried to smuggle the car out of the UAE with the help of some accomplices from another Gulf country.

“They were all arrested and they confessed to have stolen many cars and succeeded in smuggling them out of the UAE,” said a police source.
