An RTA supervisor allegedly sought a bribe of Dh2,000 from a taxi driver against not fining him for taking passengers illegally.

MA, 54, Comoros national, threatened to impose a fine of Dh4,000  on taxi driver JK,29,  who was illegally transporting passengers.

When the cabbie pleaded with him not to fine him, the RTA inspector asked him for his mobile phone number, seized the car’s registration card and asked him to return to him after dropping a passenger.

“I dropped a passenger at Sabkha area and then I called him after informing my senior in the transport company about the incident. My senior told me to negotiate with the inspector and to accept his demand. I met the inspector at Deira City Centre at his request. I begged him not to impose such a hefty fine. He insisted the fine is Dh4,000 which will increase to Dh5,000 if I fail to pay within 15 days. He then asked me to give him a bribe of  Dh2,000 for not issuing the fine and gave me until 7pm to arrange the money. He made me sign on a paper whose contents I did not know and let me go,” JK testified.

The driver informed his senior who came to Deira City Centre where he notified the police at the centre. Police saw the money that the driver was to give to the inspector and arranged for the arrest of the inspector red handed. The driver called the inspector and after handing over the money against getting back the taxi’s registration card, police raided the place and arrested the inspector.

The Court will reconvene on February 9.
