A second Emirati died in hospital after he was accidentally shot during a wedding in Dibba Fujeirah last week although firing during such events is banned in the UAE, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Ali Saeed Al Hafeeti, 17, died at the intensive care unit in Fujeirah Hospital on Tuesday following a surgery in the head, where he was shot.

“He died after the bullet penetrated his skull and the brain,” said Dr Mohammed bin Saeed, director of the Fujeirah medical zone.

Hafeeti is the second Emirati to die as a result of the celebratory shots during the wedding. Saeed Al Saraedy, 26, died on arrival in hospital after he suffered a serious injury in the chest. Their friend Walid Hafeety was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for minor bullet injuries.

“We appeal for all to abide by the law and refrain from using guns in weddings,” said Brigadier Mohammed Al Kaabi, Fujeirah police chief.

“Shooting in weddings has been banned in the UAE since the 1970s…any one who fires celebratory shots in such events will be prosecuted,” he told the Arabic language daily Alittihad.
