Sharjah’s abandoned babies – 4 in 3 months
The number of abandoned babies in Sharjah has been increasing.
In the past three months alone, four new born babies were found abandoned in different parts of Sharjah.
In comparison, about ten babies were rescued in 2011, said Naeema Al Nakhi, head of the social services section at Al Qasimi Hospital.
Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Al Nakhi said almost all abandoned babies are first brought to the Al Qasimi Hospital.
“It is first reported to us and then we take care of the babies for about two weeks, provide them with all the necessary vaccinations and medical care, before handing them over to the Social Welfare Home for Children,” said Al Nakhi.
Last week, a new-born baby girl was found abandoned near a villa in Al Hera.
According to her the number of enquiries for adopting the baby has been increasing. “We are referring all calls to the welfare home. All calls were received from UAE nationals because only they can legally adopt such children in the UAE,” she said.
