A salesman allegedly stole a handbag that a customer had forgotten in a shopping trolley when she went in search of a smaller one, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

SR, 31, Indian, was shopping at around noon on January 1pm in a supermarket in Mankhoul.

“I took a trolley and I put my hand bag in it, then I decided to change the cart for a smaller one. I went out of the supermarket and took a smaller one without remembering to take my bag from the first trolley. I went shopping with the smaller cart and after about 20 minutes I remembered my bag and rushed outside but did not find it. I asked the salesman but he said he had not seen my handbag,” SR told investigators.

The woman informed her husband who asked her to call the police. Police arrived after about 10 minutes and reviewed the cameras and found out that only two men had gone out together from the supermarket from the time the woman changed her trolley. One of the two was salesman OK, 23, who did not return while his companion returned to the supermarket after a short while.

OK’s senior called him and asked him to come to the supermarket and questioned him. The salesman admitted finding the handbag and taking it to a nearby mosque where he opened it and took Dh5,500 that was in it and a credit card and threw away the bag.

“When I came out of the supermarket for the noon prayer, I saw a hand bag in a trolley. I opened it and took the money and the cards before throwing it away,” OK admitted to the police.

Police confiscated the Dh5,500 and the cards that were in his pocket.

The Court will give its verdict on March 30.
