Suspended sentence for threat to biz partner

An Australian who confined a Pakistani business partner for 12 hours in a bathroom and threatened to kill his family back home if he did not return the money he had handed him for investment, was awarded six months suspended jail term by the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.
 
 According to the records, on October 4, the victim LD, 54, along with the accused FN, 44, arrived in Dubai from South Africa where they were concluding a trade deal.

“We stayed in a hotel in JBR. On the following day, at around 3pm while we were discussing some deals, FN became angry, snatched my mobile, wallet and passport and assaulted me.

“He pushed me into the wash room and locked the door. I begged him to release me but after about an hour, he opened the door, hit me with a steel bar and locked the door again. Later, I asked him to open the door to go to the toilet. He opened the door and I was hardly able to walk. I went back to the washroom and when I thought that he had gone to sleep at around 3am, I got out, went to my room and slept on the bed,” said the victim.

The accused also threatened the victim with assigning people to kill his family members back home.

When the accused saw the victim sleeping in his room, he pulled out his belt and slashed him on his head and body. Then he hit the victim with a chair that was in the room.
 
Later, the accused asked the victim to call friends back home to arrange money for him.

The accused continued beating the victim while he was talking to some friends and asking them for money.

Friends informed the Australian consulate in Dubai who informed the police.

Police raided the room and arrested the accused. Police released the victim who was bleeding from different areas of his body and rushed him to hospital.

The accused admitted before prosecutors to the crime but said that he had apologised to the victim for the way he had beaten him up.
