Three jailed for attacking Dubai policeman

Three Georgians received one year in jail each for attacking a policeman and causing him 35 per cent permanent disability while he was investigating a car theft that led him to discover another theft being committed in a nearby shop.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance ordered the convicts BJ,26, GK, 36, GM, 24  to be deported after serving their jail terms.

According to the records, on November 6, 2013, at around 2.20pm, a driver reported to police that some people were trying to steal his car at Naif area.

A police patrol was assigned to check and investigate the complaint.

“As we reached the location, we asked the driver to stay away from his vehicle to enable maintaining finger prints on the care untouched. We also searched if there were any CCTV cameras in the area to help identify the thieves. My colleague headed to a nearby shop and after a minute I noticed a man running out of the same shop so I ran after him. While running and passing by the same shop, someone opened the door in my face. I opened it further and looked inside to see what was going on since my colleagues was still inside,” said policeman Abdullah Salman.

The policeman could not see what was inside because the glass front was covered by an advertisement sticker. However, he could see a man who was trying to open the door which he was still holding.

“Other two men joined the first one and as they opened the door they hit and kicked me. One of them passed a knife at my neck and tore off my dress and pushed me to the ground. The attackers ran away,” said  policeman Abdullah.

Policeman Abdullah got up, called the Operation Room and asked for support.

He got into the shop to find that his colleague was bleeding from the neck and nose and the shop’s workers were all tied up.

Workers reported that four men had entered the shop. One of them cut off the telephone wires with a knife when one of the workers tried to call for help.

The rest attackers tied the workers’ hands with plastic ropes and headed to the upper storey where they tied yet another worker.

The attackers stole about Dh1.6m from the shop and put it in a bag they had.

The attackers were shocked when First Sergeant Ibrahim Hassan entered the shop. The officer was looking for CCTV cameras that may help identify the thieves of the car near the shop.

They attacked the officer with a knife and then rushed to the door. Policeman Abdullah held the door and prevented them from running away. However, they finally forced it open and ran away.

Medical report stated that policeman Abdullah sustained 35 per cent rate of permanent disability as he was injured in his neck and knee.

Police reached the accused and arrested BJ, 26, painter, GK, 36 and GM, 24 both are visitors, together with other accomplices.

In June 2014, the First Instance Court sentenced each of the accused to three years in jail and in October the Appeal court upheld the sentences.

The accused are being prosecuted for intentionally assaulting a person and causing him permanent disability.

Dubai Prosecution asked the court to implement stiffest penalty against the accused.
