Tourist escapes rape by car lift provider

A Jordanian allegedly attempted to rape a Croatian visitor to whom he offered a car lift from a shopping mall, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On the evening of November 25, 34-year-old TB was waiting for a taxi at Dubai Mall when MZ offered her a lift. She sat next to the driver while his friend was sitting on the back seat.

MZ drove away and later he dropped his friend near a supermarket. He then moved on and after sometime he claimed that he lost his way and roamed around looking for parking, the victim told investigators.

“I got scared when he parked in a remote sandy area and then he jumped to my seat before I could ask him why he stopped here. When he sat on my legs he started holding my neck and restraining both my hands. I resisted him and stretching my leg, I managed to open the driver’s door. I pushed him and ran away,” said the victim.

TB ran barefoot and left her hand bag in the car while seeking refuge. When she found a restaurant nearby, she got in. Customers at the restaurant called the police.

A policeman told investigators that when he arrived, the woman’s dress were in a mess, she had bruises around her eyes and she was crying hysterically. She was also barefoot.

She told police about a man who had tried to rape her in his car and also stole her bag.

The court will reconvene on June 18 to summon the accused.
