Tracking device stops car thief in his tracks

A ‘trace and track’ device fixed on a car owned by a vehicle rental company helped preventing a Pakistani renter from smuggling it out of the UAE, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

In November 2010, SA, 34, jobless, rented a 2009 Land Cruiser for four days from a company and submitted a forged passport with  a forged UAE visa and drove out with the car after signing the car’s lease contract and paying Dh4,000.

“SA claimed that he needed the vehicle as he had a visitor and submitted his passport to us and we kept the document in our custody until he returned the vehicle. After four days, SA failed to return the car and pay Dh9,600,” said the company’s account manager, 41, Iraqi.

The company traced the car via the ‘trace and track’ device and found out that it had stopped near Buraimi in Oman. “We asked the supplier of the device to prevent the car from starting until we retrieve it,” the manager said.

“I went to Buraimi and brought back the car after calling SA who did not answer the phone calls,” said the manager.

Police found out that the passport and the UAE residency stamp used for the crime were forged. The passport also carried forged entry and exit stamps of Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports.

In addition to forgery, SA is accused of failing to pay Dh9,600.
