Two prisoners win torture case against police
The Supreme Federal Court (FSC) supported a plea but two prisoners who were tortured at jail and ordered the prison management to pay Dh40,000 damages to the two.
The FSC upheld an appeals sentence by a Sharjah court ordering the prison management in the emirate to pay damages to the two inmates after they filed a torture case against a jailer.
The two had told court they had been subject to torture and cruelty by their jailer and medical examination supported their claims.
The inmates had sought Dhone million compensation but the Sharjah court set the sum at Dh40,000.
“The FSC’s verdict shows the law is above all in the UAE and that human rights are respected even inside punitive institutions,” the Arabic language daily Albayan said.
