Four visitors from Chile allegedly stole Dh148,000 from the car of a bank client after puncturing his car’s tyre and offering help to replace it, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim SD, 39, driver, told the police that he headed to a bank on Khalid bin Waleed Street and encashed two cheques, one for Dh148,000 and the other for Dh40,000.

“I went back to the car and kept the Dh148,000 and then walked towards another bank in the area and deposited the Dh40,000. When I returned to the car I found out that a rear tyre was punctured, so I took the spare tyre and started replacing it.

“A man approached me and offered to help. He pulled me away from the car as he talked to me while his companions pretended to replace the tyre.  The men left without replacing the tyre so I drove the car carefully to a petrol station on Mankhool Street where I replaced the tyre.  Then I headed to a bank in Jumeira where I found out the packet of money was missing from the car. I reported the theft to my employer who informed the police,” testified the driver.

Police arrested AR, GR, JA, and RA, all from Chile and aged between 32 and 40, and confiscated the money in their residence.

The Court will give its verdict on December 30.
