A UAE female lawyer saved two convicted Asian drug dealers from execution when she convinced an Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals to reduce the death sentence to imprisonment.

A Court of First Instance had sentenced the two men to death after finding them guilty of trying to smuggle drugs to the UAE, prompting them to appeal the verdict.

The judge at the Appeals court sentenced the two to 10 years in prison, fined them Dh50,000 and ordered their deportation from the country.

“The first sentence violated the law as it was based on a police operation that was conducted beyond the legal period for raiding the defendant’s house and seizing the drugs.
"Besides, the two had not been involved in a drug case before,” lawyer Asma Al Zaabi said, quoted by the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily 'Al Khaleej'.
