A UAE public prosecutor was forced to resign to avert a two-month jail sentence by the country’s top court after he was convicted of using cruelty with two Asian defendants, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The Federal Supreme Court (FSC) has sentenced the unnamed prosecutor to two months in prison but suspended the verdict after the Minister of Justice accepted his resignation, the Dubai-based Albayan said.
“After the Minister accepted his resignation, the Court decided to suspend the sentence and freeze the case,” the Arabic language daily said.
It quoted court sources as saying the prosecutor was convicted of slapping two Asian defendants and ordering placing them in custody for 24 hours without being investigated on the grounds there was no interpreter at the time.
“The prosecutor was accused of lying as he had an interpreter with him at that time…he was also accused of ordering policemen to beat the defendants.”
