An Arab woman seeking to renew her car registration in Abu Dhabi was shocked when she was told she must first pay Dh50,000. The policeman made it clear he was not asking for fees but fines accumulated by the woman for offending Mawaqif parking.

At Mawaqif office, she was told that she has persistently abused the parking spaces by either stopping her car in the wrong place, exceeding the paid stay, parking her vehicle in a place allocated for residents and failing to pay parking fees in some cases.

“The woman asked for mercy, saying she cannot afford paying that sum. Mawaqif promised to consider her request,” the Arabic language daily Al Ittihad said.

Mawaqif (parkings), an affiliate of the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi, has nearly completed a major project intended to organize car parking and end anarchy caused by random and illegal parking of vehicles. The project involved the construction of more than 100,000 parking spaces through the capital.
