Saudi Customs officials on the King Fahd causeway foiled an attempt by a local man to smuggle a foreign woman into the Gulf kingdom by hiding her beneath clothes in the back seat of his car, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The driver was stopped at a check point on the causeway linking Saudi Arabia with Bahrain and customs officials suspected he was smuggling something in the back seat, the Arabic language daily ‘Sabq’ said.

“We found a foreign woman lying with clothes on top of her in the back seat. The man was trying to smuggle her into Saudi Arabia,” the causeway’s director Daif Al Otaibi said without identifying the woman.

Many on social media found the incident strange and funny.

Muataz, a Saudi man, asked why the man in question put himself in danger for this woman. “If he loved her, he could have easily married her and brought her with him.”

Tariq, another Saudi, was surprised how she did not suffocate all that time when she was hiding under the clothes.

“How could she breathe? I am amazed by what people do and all the new ways used for smuggling.”

A spokesperson from Saudi Customs said that they have come across many similar cases in the past few years.
