Saudi authorities have decided to impose a fine of up to SR400,000 (Dh398,000) against those caught abusing their pets and other animals.

The ministry of agriculture said it would soon start enforcing a new law approved by the cabinet last year to punish those found to be cruel to animals.

The law also includes the creation of an animal rights unit at the ministry, which said it would begin enforcing fines from next month.

“People found to be cruel or abusing animals will be fined SR50,000….in case they repeat the offence, they will be fined SR400,000,” the ministry’s spokesman Jaber  Al Shahri said, quoted by the Saudi daily Asharq Al Awsat.
