A UAE mother who escaped death at the hands of her drug addicted son forgave him and insisted in court he was not trying to kill her, prompting the judge to drop all charges and order him to have treatment of addiction.

Police records show the 18-year-old son, who was also alcoholic, chased his mother with a kitchen knife to her room after she refused to give him money and banged the door with an axe to reach her.

The frightened mother then opened the balcony door and let herself down from the first floor, but lost her balance and fell in the back garden.

Having broken her leg, she crept to away and hid behind the plants before she pulled out her mobile phone and called her elder sons.

The villa watchman who saw the incident also called the police, who reached the house before the boy could find his wounded mother.

"The son fled and hid at his friend’s house, but he was later found and arrested on charges of attempted murder," the Arabic language daily 'Al Bayan' said.

"In court the mother dropped the charges and insisted her son did not try to kill her, although police found the door of her room broken by an axe.

"She said she broke her leg in an accident.

"The judge then sentenced the son to treatment sessions,” the paper added without mentioning in which emirate the incident occurred.
