Doctors admit operating on wrong kidney

Two doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have said under oath that they mistakenly operated on the wrong kidney during a 2017 surgery.

The Tennessean reports Dr. Kelvin Moses, a Vanderbilt assistant professor of urology, and Dr. Elizabeth Green, a urology resident, made the admission during depositions last month in a lawsuit filed by Carla Miller.

The Tennessee woman sued in March, saying the error damaged her urinary system and asking for $25 million in damages.

In the depositions, one doctor said a malfunctioning electronic whiteboard contributed to the error.

Attorney Brian Manookian says Miller died from heart problems in May, but her family is continuing the lawsuit.

Vanderbilt spokesman John Howser said the hospital analyzed Miller’s procedure and implemented “corrective steps” to prevent a similar occurrence.
