An 87-year-old widow and her niece were relieved on Tuesday when tenants of the old lady who had allegedly occupied her $40 million (Dh147 million) assets – including $30 million (Dh110 million) bungalow – and had not paid rent for a year finally agreed to leave.

According to a report in Singapore’s Straits Times, the story started in China where the old lady – retired physiotherapist Chung Khin Chun – met a tour guide during her holidays in China.

The 40-year-old tour guide Yang Yin remained in touch with the old lady even after she had returned to Singapore. Later he came to Singapore and stayed in her bungalow. He brought his family also there and allegedly took over her assets worth $40 million.

The widow’s niece, Hedy Mok, filed a lawsuit earlier this year to revoke Yang Yin’s guardianship of her aunt’s wealth and she turned up on Tuesday with court orders asking Yang Yin’s family to leave. The niece alleged that the family didn’t look after her aunt and she feared for her safety.

According to Straits Times, the court papers alleged that Yang asking money from the widow to be sent to his bank account in China from small sums of $4,000, which later increase to $40,000. The niece Hedy Mok allged that Ying Yan forged her signature also.

After a 7-hour standoff between the Yang Yin’s family and the niece Mok, the family finally agreed to leave the bungalow.

Yang Yin, who was not in Singapore on Tuesday when his family was left the bungalow, requested the court for adjournment to respond to the allegations, the Singapore-based daily said.
