Man fatally shot protecting grandchildren

A Detroit woman says her 62-year-old father was fatally shot while trying to protect his grandchildren from a group of men who broke into their home on the city's west side.
   
Vanessa Villneff tells WWJ-AM the men barged in about 11 p.m. Wednesday, attacked her 16-year-old nephew and threatened to kill her niece. She says her father, John Villneff, rushed over from his home next door and was shot in the back.
   
Villneff says her nephew was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries. He was expected to survive. WDIV-TV also reported details of the attack.
   
Villneff says her father was a Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient.
   
A message seeking information was sent Thursday by The Associated Press to a Detroit police spokeswoman.
