Man wanted in abduction shoots self

Police say a fugitive accused of abducting a woman from a southeastern Wisconsin hospital and fleeing in an exchange of gunfire has shot himself as officers closed in.

Racine police said Monday they tracked the 20-year-old man to a home and found fresh footprints in the snow. When officers found the suspect, they say he threatened to shoot himself.

Despite intervention efforts, police say the man shot himself. He was taken to a Milwaukee hospital. His condition is unknown.

No shots were fired by police.

Authorities say the man abducted a female employee near Rochester Sunday. Deputies spotted the man's vehicle about an hour later. As a squad car approached, the suspect fired several rounds. No one was shot. As the man fled, he left the woman behind.
