A local healer in rural Madhya Pradesh, India, burnt a baby girl's stomach with hot knife over 40 times in an attempt to cure her of suspected pneumonia.

Shivani Seheriya was taken to a traditional therapist last week by her poverty-stricken 22-year-old mother because she feared she would lose her, too, like her first-born who had died of pneumonia a year earlier, according to 'talkofnaija.com' that quoted a 'DailyMail UK' report.

He then burnt the child’s abdomen with a hot knife over 40 times, convinced it would cure her illness, but the baby's condition only worsened and she developed high fever.

So her parents rushed her to a district hospital, where doctors diagnosed that the baby was suffering from ventricular septal defect, which leaves a hole in the heart.

The surgeon who treated the baby was quoted as saying that Shivani was gravely ill and had trouble breathing when she was admitted. "When we get such cases, we try to educate the parents, and explain the importance of bringing their children to us for better treatment."
