Pregnant inmate escapes

Authorities say a pregnant inmate has been recaptured after she escaped during a doctor's visit in Alabama.

Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade tells multiple news outlets that 24-year-old Alexandria Brooke Hamilton escaped Friday morning. Hamilton was being held at the Calhoun County Jail on charges of chemical endangerment of a child and drug distribution.

Wade says a deputy wrongly removed one handcuff to allow Hamilton to sign paperwork. Wade says it's against department policy to release handcuffs from an inmate in such a situation.

Wade says the deputy then struggled with Hamilton, who is 12 to 16 weeks pregnant. Both fought in a yard before Hamilton fled into a heavily wooded area near Anniston High School, where she was captured.

Hamilton faces an additional charge of first degree escape.
