A British judge sentenced a thief who targeted old pensioners to five years in jail and ordered him not to come near old people for 15 years.

Bryan Buckley of the Welsh town of Prestatyn was found guilty of burgling several pensioner houses in North Wales, including a 99 year old man who was devastated by the disappearance of his dead wife’s jewelry, a newspaper said.

Buckley, 24, admitted the latest burglary overnight on April 5 when he took nearly 1.000 UK pounds (Dh5800) worth of property from the old man’s house.

Judge Rhys Rowlands in Mold told Buckley it was the eighth time that he targeted elderly people in Wales at a time when they have to be protected.

“In addition to the five-year jail term, Judge Rowlands issued a 15-year ASBO banning Buckley from visiting the home of any one aged over 70 who is not related to him—apart from his own Godfather,” Rhyl Journal newspaper said.

“It also bans him from going within five metres of any pensioner home, sheltered or warden controlled accommodation for the elderly anywhere in English and Wales.”

The newspaper said Buckley’s last victim was too upset to give police any information on the next day of the burglary, adding that his wife’s jewelry had been recovered except a ring she had used on special occasions.

“He did not eat for three days…he felt that it had been a wholesale attack on his independence,” it said.
