Toddler dies after mom puts him under mattress

A 19-year-old woman accused of killing her toddler son by putting him under a mattress to discipline him has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge.

Investigators said the mother, Raven Campbell, put the child under the mattress for 20 or 30 minutes and that when she moved the mattress, her son wasn't breathing.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich's office said in a news release that Campbell was indicted Tuesday and is being held without bond in the death of 2-year-old Jermyle Campbell.

An autopsy showed the boy died June 13 of dehydration and hyperthermia and had bite marks and scratches on his body.

Online jail records do not indicate whether Campbell has a lawyer.
