Challenge, possibility, and growth: Why true ambition chooses Dubai
After nearly four decades in Dubai, litigation lawyer Asim Ahmed reflects on ambition, family, and the city that shaped both his career and life

Dubai: "Dubai has not just shaped my career, but the rhythm and stability of my family’s life." For Asim Ahmed, this sentiment is not just a reflection on a successful career; it is the definitive summary of nearly 40-year love affair with a city he watched grow from a promising regional hub into a global metropolis.
Long before he became the Partner and Head of Litigation at BSA LAW in Dubai, leading one of the region’s most diverse and high-performing legal teams, Ahmed was a young, ambitious litigator sharpening his tools in Sudan. A graduate of one of the country’s most academically rigorous universities, he began practising law in 1991. His early days were defined by intense courtroom advocacy before both the superior and lower courts in Sudan, eventually earning him the title of Commissioner for Oaths from the Chief Justice.
With bilingual fluency in Arabic and English, a deep grounding in civil law systems, and a burgeoning interest in cross-border disputes, Ahmed possessed a skill set perfectly tailored for a changing world. But he needed a stage that matched his drive.
Enter Dubai.
A fusion of civil law and global commerce
When Ahmed arrived in the Emirates nearly four decades ago, he brought an established foundation of courtroom experience to a jurisdiction on the cusp of an extraordinary legal evolution.
"My move to the UAE was driven by a clear purpose: to bring that experience into a jurisdiction that was rapidly transforming, and to contribute to a legal system that was modernising at an extraordinary pace," Ahmed reflects. "Dubai offered the rare opportunity to both benefit from and add value to a country committed to excellence."
The city provided a unique legal playground where traditional civil law foundations intersected seamlessly with global commercial expectations. Rather than letting his practice stagnate, the continuously adapting judicial system pushed Ahmed to expand his horizons.
Practising before the UAE courts did more than just refine his advocacy skills. "This environment has shaped me into a more strategic, commercially aware, and forward-thinking lawyer," he says.
Navigating a dynamic legal ecosystem
Today, Ahmed’s practice spans an astonishing breadth of sectors, including real estate, commercial trade, finance, bankruptcy, maritime, and telecommunications. It is a diverse portfolio that he believes is uniquely enabled by Dubai’s positioning as a global crossroads.
"It is a testament to the city’s dynamism that one can handle a maritime dispute in the morning, a bankruptcy matter in the afternoon, and a telecommunications case the next day," Ahmed notes.
Central to this versatility is Dubai’s world-class dispute resolution ecosystem, where the coexistence of local courts, the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), and the DIFC Courts provides an unparalleled platform for complex, high-value international conflicts.
For us, Dubai has never been just a place to live; it has been a place that allowed our family to grow, learn, and feel rooted.

As the commercial nerve centre for the Middle East and Africa, the city allows Ahmed to seamlessly manage disputes for multinational corporations and local entities alike.
"Dubai’s multicultural environment has been one of my greatest teachers," he explains. "Working with clients, lawyers, and experts from around the world has strengthened my ability to communicate and negotiate across cultures. Exposure to diverse perspectives has made me a more adaptable, globally minded litigator."
Witnessing a masterclass in modernisation
Having spent close to forty years in the UAE, Ahmed has had a front-row seat to the country's grandest transformations. He highlights the real estate sector as a prime example of this maturation. What began as a young, ambitious market has evolved into a highly transparent, tightly regulated property ecosystem that attracts institutional funds, global developers, and first-time buyers alike.
This philosophy of continuous improvement extends to the judiciary, which has embraced digital court services and specialised legislation to stay ahead of global economic trends.
Yet, for all the professional triumphs, the true anchor that kept Ahmed rooted in Dubai is the human element.
"What convinced me to stay long term was the UAE’s unique combination of ambition, stability, and humanity," Ahmed says warmly. "The Emirati people are exceptionally welcoming; their culture is built on respect, generosity, and openness to those who contribute positively to the country."
A legacy passed down
Ultimately, Ahmed’s connection to the UAE is deeply personal. It is the backdrop against which his family found long-term stability, and where his sons grew up immersed in a culture of safety and possibility.
The paths his children have chosen reflect the international, forward-thinking mindset fostered by their upbringing in Dubai:
- One son completed his higher education in Ireland.
- Another, inspired by his father’s illustrious legal journey, is currently pursuing a law degree in the UK, with his sights firmly set on returning to contribute to the UAE’s legal sector.
- His youngest son is completing his schooling locally, ready to step into the vast opportunities the region offers.
"What matters most to me is that they have grown up with confidence, belonging, and a strong connection to the place they call home," says Ahmed. "For us, Dubai has never been just a place to live; it has been a place that allowed our family to grow, learn, and feel rooted."
Summarising the biggest lesson from his forty-year journey, Ahmed points to a simple truth: growth happens where challenge and possibility meet.
"Dubai offers both," he concludes, "and it continues to inspire me professionally and personally."
