Dubai: There are cities that offer opportunity, and then there is Dubai — a place where ambition feels almost contagious. For Máire Morris, founder of Morris Global Consulting, it was not just another market; it was a turning point. Nearly a decade after first arriving, her story reflects what many entrepreneurs quietly believe: Dubai is not just where businesses grow — it is where they accelerate.

When Máire first landed in Dubai nearly ten years ago, she immediately sensed something different. “There was a level of ambition, energy and pace that I hadn’t experienced in many other markets,” she says. “It felt like a place where people genuinely wanted to build things, scale quickly and think internationally from day one.”

At the time, she had already established her consulting business in Dublin. But increasing demand from fashion brands and retailers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar brought her to the region. What began as a series of exploratory visits soon turned into a strategic move.

“I could see that Dubai was positioning itself as a serious global fashion hub,” she explains. “Within one city, you can meet investors, global retailers, founders and government entities all operating at a very high level. It made complete sense.”

That realisation led her to set up an office in Dubai Design District (D3). Within a year, she relocated the company’s global headquarters to the city — a decision that would reshape both her business and her outlook.

Dubai 'pushes you to think bigger'

Dubai did more than provide access — it challenged her to evolve.

“The city matched my ambition and mindset perfectly,” Máire says. “It pushes you to think bigger. The speed of business here forces you to become adaptable and commercially sharp very quickly.”

She describes the environment as competitive but rewarding. “It’s survival of the fittest. If you’re not agile and strategic, you will get left behind.”

Yet, it is precisely this intensity that fuels growth. Surrounded by driven founders and global leaders, Máire found herself constantly raising her own standards. “Dubai attracts people who are building at scale. That naturally elevates how you operate as a business owner.”

The global advantage

For a consultancy focused on international expansion, Dubai’s geographical and strategic position has been a game changer.

“One of the biggest advantages is accessibility,” she explains. “From Dubai, you can manage relationships across Europe, Asia, Africa and the wider Middle East. That is incredibly powerful.”

But it is not just about location. Máire highlights the city’s business-friendly approach. “Dubai is very solution-oriented. Decision-making is faster, and there’s a genuine appetite for collaboration.”

Equally important is the diversity of the market itself. “The UAE consumer is globally aware and digitally connected. If a brand succeeds here, it often has strong potential internationally because the market is already so competitive and multicultural.”

Growing with the city

Looking back, Máire sees her journey as closely tied to Dubai’s own evolution.

“When I first arrived, the city was already growing rapidly, but today the maturity of the business ecosystem is on another level,” she says. “There’s now a stronger focus on sustainability, innovation and supporting regional talent.”

As Dubai expanded, so did her business. What began as a consultancy has evolved into a full-service operation offering everything from design and production to branding, marketing and international scaling.

“Dubai gave us the platform to grow far beyond what would have been possible elsewhere,” she reflects. “It hasn’t been easy, but it has absolutely been worth it.”

More than a business hub

Despite its fast pace, Dubai offers more than just professional opportunity.

“For me, what keeps me here comes down to opportunity, connectivity and quality of life,” Máire says. “You can build an international business while enjoying exceptional infrastructure, safety and a very high standard of living.”

There is also a deeper sense of belonging. “After so many years, Dubai has become home. I’ve built my business, my network and my life here.”

She adds with a smile: “And I won’t lie — it’s nice not seeing the Irish rain every day.”

A truly global mindset

Dubai’s multicultural environment has also shaped how Máire approaches her work.

“You work with people from every background imaginable,” she says. “It teaches you to adapt, to understand different perspectives and to approach business with a global mindset.”

For a consultant in fashion and retail, this is invaluable. “What works in the GCC may not work in Europe or North America. Living in Dubai sharpens your ability to think globally while respecting local nuances.”

A city that keeps moving forward

Today, Dubai is both Máire’s strategic base and her long-term home — a rare balance that few cities can offer.

“There are very few places in the world with this level of international access and opportunity,” she says. “But beyond that, there is an energy here that is difficult to explain. The city is constantly evolving, always building, always looking forward.”

And that, perhaps, is what makes Dubai truly special.

“It’s the mindset,” Máire concludes. “It’s a place where ambition is welcomed, growth is expected, and the future is always in focus.”
