When asked if nasty surprises awaited Swiss banks, Roth said in an interview with Swiss daily Tages-Anzeiger: "Of course there will be setbacks here too, but don't worry: the situation for our banks is not bad."
Roth said the SNB expects the Swiss economy to contract by 3 per cent this year and sees no growth at all in 2010.
"This would mean Switzerland getting off lightly from the crisis, compared for example with Germany," Roth said.
"Furthermore, our companies have booked very substantial profits in recent years and are overall in a good financial state."
The SNB was always in a position to restrict money supply in the short term if inflation threatened during an economic upswing after central banks pumped liquidity into the markets.
"As we provided the liquidity to the market through short-term credits, it would be enough in principle to stop extending the credits," Roth said.
