Jumeirah is to add 57 new hotels to its portfolio by 2011 as part of the group’s ambitious expansion drive to have key hotels and developments in cities around the world.

China will see a major presence by the group as it plans to take over and manage 10 hotels under its banner. One third of the expansion will be based in the rest of Asia, while the Gulf will see a third share of its expansion. The remaining share will be spread across Europe and Americas.

Han Tang Jumeirah Shanghai, which will open by August 2008, is the first in the group’s expansion into China. Shanghai Lixing Hotel Limited last year appointed Jumeirah Group to manage the property, which is a joint venture between Shanghai Hotel Investments Limited and Shui On Private Group.

The management deal with Shanghai Lixing follows Jumeirah’s announcement in the same year of its intention to push its portfolio growth, and follows the group’s entry into the North American market with the launch of Jumeirah Essex House in New York on January 15.

Tricia Warwick, Vice-President of Sales at Jumeirah, said the group’s expansion plans are driven either by managing the properties that are acquired by Dubai Investment Group or co-operating with local owners.

“We are currently expanding into the international market through management contracts such as Jumeirah Essex House in New York, which was acquired by Dubai Investment Group last year,” said Warwick.

After assuming management of Essex House, one of New York’s most prominent and historic luxury hotels, it was renamed the Hotel Jumeirah Essex House after it was acquired by Dubai Investment Group last September. The acquisition is the first in the Americas for Jumeirah and a significant step in their expansion plans.

Jumeirah also currently manages the Jumeirah Carlton Tower and Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel in London’s Belgravia. According to Warwick, the group has also signed management contracts for hotels in Mallorca on the Spanish coast, Jumeirah at Beetham Tower in London, Jumeirah SouthLands Resort in Bermuda and Jumeirah Phuket Private Island resort in Thailand.

And all the hotel properties are expected to be ready before 2011.

Jumeirah Group is also making its presence felt in the GCC. It has been appointed to manage the luxury hotel at Jumeirah Dubai Towers – Doha, Qatar, a five-star property that will feature 146 luxurious rooms and suites.

Jumeirah will also manage the luxury hotels and theme park within the Saraya Aqaba development that is expected to transform the beachfront town of Aqaba, Jordan, into a world-class waterfront resort city. Its aim is to operate properties around the world.

The luxury hotel chain group in Dubai encompasses Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Jumeirah Beach Club Resort and Spa, Madinat Jumeirah and Jumeirah Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa.
