Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has awarded IT systems supplier Aveva Marine a contract to support the design, fabrication and construction of its new projects.

The value of the contract has not been revealed but industry sources say Aveva has agreed similar contracts with similar-sized shipbuilding companies that were worth Dh1.8 million.

Aveva will develop software programs to be used in ship design and also provide training and consultancy to ADSB staff.

In addition it will help to configure the current system used by ADSB to the company’s technical requirements.

“We will use the marine solutions provided by Aveva to help us achieve the business and operational benefits that we need in order to meet our business development plan,” said Waleed Al Tamim, Technical Director of Ship Design at ADSB.

“In addition to the UAE Navy contract, we have been awarded contracts by the navies of other countries so we want to implement world-class production technologies and modern working practices.”

ADSB specialises in the construction, repair, refit and upgrading of naval, military and commercial ships at its yard located in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi.

The new customised system provided by Aveva will enable ADSB to design, build and operate large and complex marine projects.

“We are developing our commercial shipbuilding business to match growing opportunities, particularly in the Arabian Gulf,” said Al Tamim.

Aveva Marine is part of the Aveva Group which is based in Cambridge, England, and is one of the world’s leading IT solutions and services providers to the oil and gas, chemical and shipbuilding industries.

The group, listed on the London Stock Exchange, has supplied 85 per cent of the world’s top 20 shipbuilders and last year reported pre-tax profits of £24.7m on revenues of £94.9m.

Aveva Marine offers a system that supports universal information access, data security, revision management, global project execution, process definition and application, workflow permission and a workflow audit trail.

It also provides a design and construction solution that maximises design and shipyard efficiency, supports global project execution and encapsulates the advantages of a single design database to deliver a robust information management system.

In the region Aveva has provided shipbuilding solutions to Dubai Dry Docks, Dragon Offshore, Aries Marine, Port Zayed Shipyard and the Suez Canal Authority amongst others.

ADSB was recently awarded the Al Saber Project, a multi-million-dollar contract to build 12 patrol boats for the UAE Coastguard.

PATROL BOAT CONTRACT

Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to build 12

patrol boats for the  UAE Coastguard. The 34-metre boats, constructed in composite materials, have a “mother-daughter” design.

The mother vessel has a stern ramp that accommodates a smaller, high-speed daughter boat which can be launched quickly at sea to enable easy interception.

The patrol boats will be laminated in ADSB’s new composite workshop at the company’s Musaffah shipyard. ADSB has now commenced the second phase of the composite facility with the construction of an outfitting workshop.

Bill Saltzer, ADSB’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Abu Dhabi Ship Building has been working hard towards securing this contract for some time and we are  delighted to have been  selected as the builder  of this new class of patrol boat.”

The design for the vessel has been provided by the coastguard who have also supplied the moulds for the hull, main deck and superstructure.

ADSB will build a second set of moulds to enable simultaneous building of multiple vessels, allowing delivery of four or five boats a year once in full production.

The patrol boats will be powered by twin marine diesel engines which will drive a conventional propeller and shaft arrangement.

The design concept is for a modern heavy-duty composite boat that  is both easy to operate and maintain. This is the first major contract awarded to ADSB for the new composite facility.
