Agility, the Middle East’s leading global logistics provider, has further expanded its presence in the region with a joint partnership to open its operations in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Agility Kurdistan Limited will capitalise on the vast opportunities presented in the Kurdish region’s developing market while solidifying and strengthening Agility’s role in Iraq as a whole, the company said.

Kurdistan in Iraq is almost untouched by the violence that started after the US invasion to topple Saddam.

Agility shares close ties with the government of the Kurdistan region and Elias Monem, Agility CEO, Middle East and Africa, said he believed the new venture would also support the development of Iraq.

“Agility Kurdistan Limited will be able to play a positive role in the progression and development of the region,” he said.

“We have strong support from the provincial Kurdish Government and we are also working closely with non-governmental organisations and will be instrumental in aiding and assisting the expansion of the area’s infrastructure,” said Monem.

Besides supporting the development of the Kurdish supply chain network, Monem said he was confident the new organisation’s operations will have other positive effects for the country. “We anticipate that our presence in the region will encourage more foreign direct investment and will help boost the Kurdish economy and also benefit the whole of Iraq,” he said.

The joint venture for Agility Kurdistan is formed by Agility and Kurdistan Capital Investment, along with two other well established regional business figures.

The new entity will invest in the construction of warehousing facilities in order to provide storage, transportation, freight forwarding, customs clearance and associated services to its customers. It will also be exploring real estate activities.

“Agility Kurdistan gives us the opportunity to reinforce our presence in Iraq with a new foothold in the north, where there is a huge potential for business growth,” said Monem. “We are very excited about the opportunity to diversify our customer base and strengthen our brand name in Iraq.”
