Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) is keen on involving the private sector in the logistics industry in a big way to grab the emerging opportunities, according to a top official of the department.

Khalid Al Kassim, Deputy Director General for Planning and Development, DED, said: "Interactions with the private sector will play a key role in the Government of Dubai's endeavour to address the challenges and opportunities in the logistics business. Dubai has a leading position in the field of logistics services regionally and internationally. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has identified logistics as one of the key strategic sectors contributing to the sustained economic development of Dubai, and DED has established International Logistics Services internally to support the growth of the sector."

In this regard DED has been organising forums to bring the government and the private sector closer to address the challenges in the logistics industry.

"The forums are a part of DED's strategy to strengthen the quality movement in Dubai, which is a reflection of the quest for excellence by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed. Dubai has already made a global imprint with its emphasis on quality norms and standards. A number of issues related to developing the logistics industry and ways to raise the standard of those working in the field are being tackled through this ongoing forum," said Al Kassim.

David Harris, Director International Logistics Services, DED, said: "The forums play a key role in aligning the interests of the government and the private sector. These will assist in the development of both tactical and strategic initiatives to further strengthen the sector. The sector has been a cornerstone of economic development, and the better the communication and alignment, the more it can flourish and support Dubai's growth."
