A top-level meeting to discuss speed limits and ways to streamline the movement of heavy vehicles was held by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police.

The meeting was attended by Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Chairman and Executive Director, and Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Deputy General Commander of Dubai Police.

Al Tayer praised the continuing co-operation between the two bodies, which had led to the launch of several joint awareness campaigns and improved co-operation over traffic enforcement issues. This was a clear demonstration of the organisations' strategic partnership.

"The RTA is currently undertaking a study of traffic movement across Dubai involving site surveys, interviews and workshops with the concerned departments and companies.

"The RTA has also developed a model plan to forecast the movements of heavy vehicles and conducted several studies to determine the need for rail lines to transport cargo.

"The studies have assessed the current prohibited timings and routes for truck movements, the need for dedicated roads for heavy vehicles and the organisational and structural aspects of the management of trucks and cargo movements in Dubai."

Al Tayer said the studies would provide a systematic framework to forecast future truck movements and assess the relevant policies and options.

Al Mazina called for the provision of lay-by areas linked to public transport routes so that truck drivers can park their trucks and use buses to return home or visit Downtown. He also called for improvements to parking areas on the approaches to roads that were subject to truck movement restrictions including the provision of toilets and cafeterias.
