A Qantas jumbo jet carrying 414 passengers from Sydney to Singapore was forced back to Australia shortly after take-off yesterday due to an engine problem, the airline said.

Flight QF5, a four-engine Boeing 747, landed back in Sydney at 6.15 pm (0715 GMT) without incident. "It experienced an engine surge in engine number three shortly after takeoff," a Qantas spokeswoman said. "In line with operating procedures the flight crew shut down the engine." Qantas said the plane, which was scheduled to fly on to Frankfurt from Singapore, dumped fuel at sea before returning to Sydney.
