India needs to improve logistics and cut down on consignment clearance time at its ports, said a paper by Ernst and Young and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

Although ports in India are utilised up to 90 per cent, there is congestion due to high transit times, high logistics costs and fewer large vessels, said the report, which suggests steps to transform ports into world-class facilities.

The time taken for clearing import and export cargo in India is 21 days and 19 days respectively against a working week in Singapore.
