Dubai Metro's second major independent power station located at Union Square is operational, Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The station has a maximum capacity of 160MVA and is supplied with 132/33 KV sub-transformers designed to work automatically. It also has advanced monitoring and protection systems, as well as fire-fighting capabilities.

Adnan Al Hammadi, Director of the RTA's Rail Projects Construction Department, said trial operations of the Metro trains will proceed over the next few months.

Power will be supplied by the first and second-generation stations for the 52.1km Red Line, which extends from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali.

The third main sub-station, also at Union Square, is currently in the final phases of testing and will supply power to the Green Line.

Al Hammadi said the Metro's power-generation systems were reliable and had adequate back-up.

Should a failure happen at any one of the three major power stations, the remaining two would take over the full electricity load of the Metro.

He said the operation of the major stations with a capacity of 13KV involved the participation of experts from various engineering specialisations.

The engineers have spared no effort to ensure co-ordination among all parties, and have executed the project in consultation with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

Al Hammadi also said the focus was high on reliability and safety. The RTA has been careful to ensure that the power generation network met the international standards followed by Dewa.
