Five consortia prequalified for highway project

Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport has prequalified five consortia for a Dh10 billion project to connect the emirate with Saudi Arabia and Qatar through a new highway, a senior official said.

"Construction on the Mafraq-Ghweifat highway project will start during the fourth quarter of 2009," Faisal Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Highways at department, told Zawya Dow Jones yesterday. "The 327km highway is the artery between the three states," he said, adding that construction will take up to four years. It will connect the UAE with Qatar.

The department will finalise the request for proposal documents, the concession agreement and output specifications by the end of this quarter, Al Suwaidi said. The project will be awarded during the second half of the year.

Among the bidding companies are France's Bouygues Travaux Publ-ics, Austria's Strabag SE, Australia's Macquarie Capital Group Ltd, Italy's Autostrade Oer l'Italia SpA, Impregilo SpA, Besix SA of Belgium, Greece's Consolidated Construction Co, China Communications Construction Co and the UAE's Emirates Utilities Co Holding.
