Global steel demand likely to fall 14.9% in 2009

lONDON Global steel demand is expected to fall 14.9 per cent in 2009 to 1.019 billion tonnes, the steepest fall since the Second World War, forecasts from the World Steel Association industry body showed yesterday. The association, whose members produce about 85 per cent of the world's steel, said it expected demand to stabilise in the latter part of the year, leading to a recovery in 2010. However, the association did not provide an exact forecast for the next year.
