Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India's leading engineering and construction firms, has won two infrastructure development contracts worth $231 million (Dh848million) in the UAE.

A senior official yesterday said the company is targeting the region with its competitive advantage and expects to benefit from the current economic environment.

Speaking to Emirates Business from India, D Morada, General Manager, L&T, said: "These orders were secured against stiff international competition and will be executed by the power transmission and distribution sector of L&T Abu Dhabi.

"At present, we are already executing 20 substations of various capacities in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai," said Morada.

The first contract is an engineering procurement and construction (EPC) order valued at $164m, awarded by the Al Ain Distribution Company. It involves the construction of seven electrical substations, associated MV cabling and overhead transmission line in Al Ain.

Morada said this is one of the single largest value orders received by L&T in the UAE for the power sector.

According to terms of the contract, L&T will design and build these 33/11kV primary substations to the specifications of the international consultant PB Power and will be completed in 24 months.

The contract encompasses design and construction of civil buildings with complete set of utilities such as air conditioning, fire protection and lighting systems.

The second contract is an EPC order for augmentation and expansion of 33KV power transmission network for $67m from Abu Dhabi Distribution Company.

Its scope covers design, supply and construction of 300km of 33kv transmission line network in the western region of Abu Dhabi, with the contract completion of 22 months.

"In the Gulf markets, our interests are in construction, infrastructure, hydrocarbon, power and electrical sectors. We also have a presence in the IT services sector," he said.

The company was last month awarded a $245m contract for the construction of a hotel and apartments for the second Asian Beach Games, a mosque and underground cabling by Oman Tourism Development Company Engineering.

L&T is a $7bn technology driven engineering and construction organisation, and one of the largest companies in India's private sector.
