Malaysian firm shortlisted for Brazil project

Scomi Engineering Bhd, a Malaysian builder, and Bombardier, the world's largest maker of commuter trains and electric locomotives, are part of two groups shortlisted for a monorail project in Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a Sao Paulo government notice obtained from one of the consortiums.

The tender, submitted on February 18 and worth $1.7 billion (Dh6.2bn), is for the 23.9-km Tiradentes project, according to a person familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified.

The company, through its Scomi Rail Bhd unit, formed a consortium with CR Almeida SA Engenharia De Obras in July 2009 to jointly submit proposals for monorail projects in the South American country. Calls to Scomi Engineering in Kuala Lumpur and Bombardier in Portugal were unanswered.
