In an overwhelming response, Emirate’s inaugural A380 flight to New York on October 1 is sold out.

“First class and business class was booked within minutes of the announcement of the flight and less than nine economy class tickets were left to be sold,” said an Emirates airline official yesterday.

Emirates airline announced the inaugural flight of the double-decker Airbus 380 from October 1 to New York yesterday.

The jumbo A380 offers a total of 489 seats – 14 in first, 76 in business and 399 in economy class.

The return ticket rates for the economy class on the Dubai-New York flight is Dh5,080, business class is Dh19,780 and Dh30,860 for first class. Emirates also announced it will start operating its A380 to London Heathrow from December 1, 2009 and Sydney-Auckland from February 1, 2009.

“The A380 will spread Emirates’ wings to some of the furthest points on the airline’s network – New York, London Heathrow, Sydney and Auckland – reinforcing the carrier’s extensive reach and span,” the airline said in statement.

Emirates, by far the largest customer for the new Airbus with 58 on order, will take delivery of five of the double-decker aircraft this year.

Other A380 orders placed by Emirates include a medium-range three class 517-seater, and a medium-range two class aircraft with 640 seats.

Tim Clark, President of Emirates, said in a statement that while the airline is still debating their first commercial A380 route, it had always been Emirates’ intention to fly the aircraft on capacity-constrained trunk routes and the new cities now scheduled for A380 services brought this plan to fruition.

“We have played an integral role during the design and development stage to take the aircraft from the drawing board to the production line, and we look forward to bringing them into commercial service,” Clark said.

“Our customers can rightly anticipate an exhilarating experience on the state-of-the-art aircraft, which will be especially appointed and equipped to Emirates’ exacting standards. We will unveil our exciting in-flight features and facilities shortly.”
