Forty-two companies have purchased tender documents from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) for the IWPP consultancy services for the first phase of the Hassyan plant, according to an official who did not wish to be named.

The project will be located at the Hassyan site near the border with Abu Dhabi and comprise a 1,500 megawatt power and 120 million-gallon-a-day desalination complex.

"We opened the tenders today (March 8) and awarding the contract will take another 45 days or so. Then the winning consultancy will prepare the specifications for the project contract, which will be awarded by end-2010," the official told Emirates Business.

He said: "The postponement by a further two weeks from the February 22 date was due to the fact that companies had asked for an extension."

The introduction of the IWPP model "frees up funds" for other Dewa investments, said Saeed Al Tayer, Dewa's CEO, according to a Zawya Dow Jones in January.
