Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) signed contracts valued at Dh3.13 billion yesterday, for the construction of six substations, pipeline and cable-laying projects.
The deals were signed by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO, Dewa, with senior officials of the respective firms, two of which are from the UAE and one each from Saudi Arabia, France, Germany and Switzerland.
Al Tayer stressed the need to develop these projects by the contracted date in order to commission them at the right time. "We always deliver on time," he told Emirates Business on the sidelines of the contract signing function. "We do this for two reasons – to meet growth and to supply the needs of new customers."
Reiterating that there had been no delays in the past, he said Dewa had nothing to do with any reported delays in completing power and water infrastructure projects. He said it was most likely that project delays, if any, were an issue between the private developer and the contractor.
The contracts to supply, instal, test and commission (SITC) 132/11 substations were awarded to ABB, Areva and Riyadh Cables while the 400/132 substation deal was signed with Siemens. Ghantoot Gulf Contracting bagged the 167km pipeline deal while Ducab secured the low-voltage cable contract and Riyadh Cables, the high-voltage project.
All contracts are scheduled to be completed within an estimated 14 to 18 months while cable laying is to be finished in 24 months, a senior Dewa official said. Areva T&D bagged the biggest Dh1.03bn SITC deal for three 132/11 kV substations at Dubai Investment Park, Skyline, Marine Club, Oud Al Muteena-2, Jebel Ali Industrial area and Kifaf.
The SITC contract for another three 132/11 kV substations valued at Dh250 million went to ABB. Riyadh Cables' Dh300m contract is for supplying the same voltage powered substations and for SITC of 132kV cables while Siemens' contract for Dh470m is for the 400/132kV substation at Mamzar Beach. Ghantoot Gulf Contracting was awarded the SITC contract for building the 167km long glass reinforced epoxy water transmission pipeline project for Dh820m.
