The Dolphin project that will supply the UAE with natural gas from Qatar is to be inaugurated today by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, at a ceremony in the industrial city of Ras Laffan.
The event will attended by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces; Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Dolphin Energy and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Presidential Affairs.
Also present at the ceremony will be a number of GCC energy ministers, heads of international oil and natural gas companies and representatives of firms involved in digging and exploration for the project, which started eight years ago.
Gas from 24 wells in the northern Qatari field will be pumped to the UAE and Oman in the first project of its kind in the Middle East. The $5 billion (Dh14.6bn) development will have a capacity of two billion cubic feet a day.
Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company owns 51 per cent of Dolphin Energy and Total of France and Occidental Petroleum of the United States each own 24.5 per cent.
The project will meet the long-term gas needs of the UAE and Oman.
