Masdar and Nigeria's National Petroleum Corporation yesterday signed a co-operation agreement to study and develop projects to reduce carbon emissions in Nigeria's oil and gas sector in line with the clean development mechanism emanating from the Kyoto Protocol.

The agreement will be officially signed with the Nigerian petroleum corporation in Abuja.

Masdar CEO Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the strategic agreement reflects Masdar's keenness to support and develop projects that ensure the sustained growth of oil and gas sector at the international level.

Masdar said co-operation with the Nigerian corporation will cover, in addition to curbing the burning of gas and the resulting emissions, an assessment and study of other carbon emission reduction projects, especially those related to the clean and economical use of energy.
