Etihad Airways on Sunday launched its first flight from Abu Dhabi to the Chinese capital Beijing, following a decision that was announced five weeks ago.

“To open the new Beijing flights six months prior to the Olympic Games is a special achievement for Etihad Airways,” James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ chief executive, said in a statement.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will offer four flights a week from Abu Dhabi to Beijing, which is the eighth city in the Asia-Pacific region of the airline’s global network. Etihad currently operates a total of 728 weekly flights compared to 494 flights during the same season last year.

Hogan had said last week that the airline plans to start flights to Moscow in December 2008, followed by the Kazakh city of Almaty next year and then to the Belarus capital Minsk.

The carrier, which flies to 44 destinations including New York, also plans to increase the number of flights on its Sydney and Brisbane routes, and add Melbourne and either Perth or Adelaide.
