Sales of counterfeit engines bearing the name of car manufacturer Honda are costing its agents in the UAE more than Dh4 million in lost trade a year, it has been claimed.

Officials say they are escalating a crackdown on traders who sell the replacement engines, along with fake parts, waterpumps and generators. Earlier this year, officials raided a warehouse in Sharjah and seized 960 fake Honda GX engines, worth Dh750,000.

Around 200,000 counterfeit Honda products are sold in the UAE each year, said Parshant Sharma, operation manager, Power Product and Marine Engine, Trading Enterprises, part of the Al Futtaim Group. It is the sole distributor of Honda cars, motorcycles, and marine and power products in the Emirates.

“Authorities have decided to take action against traders dealing in engines that copy the shape of Honda’s engines, irrespective of whether they bear the Honda name, to maintain the rights of both agents and consumers.”

“With trademark registration, we have the legal power to sue fake product traders,” said Sharma.
