Momentum Logistics, a subsidiary of international port management company, Gulftainer, has strengthened its position in Iraq following a tie up with Atlas freight forwarders network.

Gulftainer's Kurdistan-based office, MTLS, joined Atlas, a group of independent forwarding companies, ocean transportation intermediaries/non-vessel operating common carriers and related service providers. Momentum's UAE office joined the network late last year.

Atlas International Network is one of the largest alliances of freight forwarders in the world and has been in business for more than 10 years. The Atlas network is a close-knit alliance of companies involved in the freight forwarding sector who work together enabling members to compete with global players. Atlas has more than 160 members with over 190 offices in more than 90 countries around the globe, each one with the flexibility and service only locally-owned companies can provide.

Momentum Logistics General Manager Matthew Derrick said: "Joining the Atlas International Network will go a long way towards promoting our presence in Iraq. MTLS is the first Atlas agent in the country and therefore provides a new opportunity for the network as a whole. In fact, within 24 hours of having been accepted as part of the network, we had received a number of enquiries. As a member of the Atlas network, MTLS will have access to a global network of agents that operate in accordance with the highest international standards."

Since its inception in October 2008, Sharjah-based Momentum Logistics has been focusing on growing and expanding its services, and this latest move is in line with its aim of becoming a global provider of choice for third-party logistics and supply chain management services.

The company's 8,000 sqm facility in Iraq opened earlier this year and is located in Zakho on the border with Turkey. Momentum recently opened another two offices in the UAE – one in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi – bringing the total number of its UAE offices to three.
